Athletic Training Program Technical Standards for Admission

Technical Standards for Admission

The Athletic Training Program (ATP) at Washington State University is both rigorous and intense, and places specific requirements and demands on the students enrolled. An objective of the program is to prepare graduates to enter a variety of employment settings and render care to a wide spectrum of individuals engaged in physical activity. The program has established technical standards, in compliance with accreditation standards, that embody the essential functions students must be able to perform with or without reasonable accommodation in order to achieve the knowledge, skills, and competencies of an entry-level athletic trainer. Students will not be admitted to the ATP or will be dismissed from the ATP if they cannot meet these standards with or without reasonable accommodation.
Candidates for selection to the ATP are required to indicate that they understand and will be able to meet the
program’s technical standards with or without reasonable accommodation. Under the technical standards, students must be able to:

  • Assimilate, analyze, synthesize, integrate concepts and problem solve to formulate assessments and therapeutic judgments and distinguish deviations from the norm
  • Perform appropriate physical examinations using accepted techniques, and accurately, safely and efficiently use equipment and materials during the assessment and treatment of patients
  • Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients and colleagues, including individuals from different cultural and social backgrounds, including but not limited to the ability to establish rapport with patients and communicate judgments and treatment information effectively
  • Understand and speak English at a level consistent with competent professional practice
  • Record physical examination results and treatment plans clearly and accurately
  • Maintain composure and continue to function well during periods of high stress
  • Adjust to changing situation and uncertainty in clinical situations
  • Demonstrate effective skills and appropriate demeanor and rapport that relate to professional education and quality patient care

If a student states that he/she has a disability or without so stating requests a reasonable accommodation, the Athletic Training Program Director will work with Access Center, the Associate Director for Athletic Training Services to determine whether a reasonable accommodation is available. Students may also self-refer to the Access Center. A student need not share the nature of the disability with the Department of Athletics at Washington State University.

Compliance with the technical standards does not guarantee a student’s eligibility for the Board of Certification
exam.

Statement for Students NOT Requesting Accommodations

I have read and understand the technical standards listed above and I believe to the best of my knowledge that at this time I can meet each of these standards without reasonable accommodation for a disability or disabilities. I understand that if I am unable to meet these standards, with or without reasonable accommodation, I will not be admitted into or may be dismissed from the program. Your signature on this document does not prevent you from contacting the Access Center or addressing an issue of reasonable accommodation for a disability or disabilities at any time.
