Add-On Endorsement Program
Checklist for completing the add-on endorsement as part of your graduate degree at WSU:
- Graduate School Application – Begin by applying to WSU’s Graduate School.
- Endorsement Program Application – Complete this form to apply for your chosen add-on endorsement.
- Valid Teaching Certificate A copy of your current Washington State teaching certificate will be uploaded as part of the Program Application form.
- Coursework Self-Evaluation – If applicable, complete a self-evaluation form detailing prior coursework that may fulfill endorsement requirements.
Checklist for completing an add-on endorsement at WSU:
- University Application – Begin by applying to WSU.
- Endorsement Program Application – Complete this form to apply for your chosen add-on endorsement.
- Valid Teaching Certificate – A copy of your current Washington State teaching certificate will be uploaded as part of the Program Application form.
- Coursework Self-Evaluation – If you’ve completed relevant courses that may apply toward your endorsement, please complete a self-evaluation form outlining those credits. You will need to submit official transcripts of any approved transfer work.
Testing
In addition to completing all of the course work outlined by WSU, candidates must pass the relevant content exam for their chosen endorsement area. For the Bilingual Education endorsement, candidates must also demonstrate oral and written proficiency in the designated language through additional testing.

Adding the endorsement to your teacher certificate
Once you’ve completed all required coursework and passed the necessary content exam, you’re ready to add the endorsement to your Washington State teaching certificate.
Please email the Office of Field Services and Certification, and they will guide you through the final steps to officially add the endorsement to your Washington teacher certificate.
Additional Pathways to Add an Endorsement in Washington State
There are two additional options for adding an endorsement in Washington state listed below. Visit the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction website for full details.
- Test only – many endorsements can be added by passing the approved content exam and applying directly to the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
- National Boards – Teachers may add an endorsement through National Board Certification if they hold a certificate issued by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS), and there is a direct equivalency between the endorsement sought and their National Board certificate area (See National Boards Endorsement Chart).
