Biography
Alex Gang knows a thing or two about sports. He has been an athlete, a coach, and a faculty member.
Athlete
He played professional soccer for Incheon United FC in the Korean K-League, a top-flight professional league in Korea, where they reached the semifinals of the Korean FA Cup and U23 Reserve League.
Collegiately, he had an All-American career at Oklahoma City University from 2007-10, where the forward earned NAIA national honors his junior year in after registering 46 points on 22 goals and two assists. He finished his career with 92 points on 38 goals and 16 assists over 84 games while making 79 starts. During his collegiate career, the Stars earned 61 wins, including a 20-win campaign in 2008 that featured a 7-0-1 conference record within the Sooner Athletic Conference and an appearance in the NAIA Men’s Soccer Championship semifinals.
Coach
His coaching background includes working as the Youth Academy Director for Seongnam FC from 2015 to 2017, along with a stint as the assistant coach for the men’s soccer program at Midway University (Ky.) in 2021. He was a volunteer assistant coach at The Citadel during the 2022 season.
Academics
Alex earned his bachelor’s degree in political science in 2011 from Oklahoma City University. Upon graduation, he went on to Indiana University-Bloomington to study public management at the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs (SPEA). He earned his Ph.D. in sport management from the School of Public Health at the same institution.
Most recently, Alex was an assistant professor in the Sport Management program at The Citadel.
Research Interests
His research interest centers on identifying the outcomes of sport participation, in which he utilizes social and cultural capital as the theoretical base.
