The Learning & Performance Research Center

LPRC at Washington State University

At the Learning and Performance Research Center, we are a collaborative community for interdisciplinary research and innovation in learning, performance, and assessment. Our center brings together faculty, students, and external partners to explore pressing educational and psychological questions through funded and unfunded projects that reflect our shared curiosity and commitment to solving basic and applied problems.

We support inquiry and innovation, interdisciplinary grant development, mentorship and capacity-building, and community-engaged research.

Whether you are seeking collaboration, consultation, or a place to grow your research ideas, the LPRC is a space where systematic curiosity meets community.

What are the LPRC’s Primary Areas of Study?

The LPRC specializes in three interconnected areas: evaluation, cognition, and measurement. This synergy enables us to:

  • Develop assessments to examine human performance,
  • Deepen understanding of human cognitive architecture and its role in effective instruction,
  • Evaluate interventions in real-world settings, and
  • Advance psychometric and research methodologies.

Our research focuses on key areas such as developing expertise in the sciences and engineering, large-scale assessments, educational and psychological measurement, and understanding the factors that influence student success throughout the educational pipeline.

What Opportunities are Available for Graduate Students?

Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows at the LPRC receive comprehensive training in integrating measurement, cognition, and program evaluation to enhance both basic and applied educational research. With funding support from the center, students tackle real-world educational challenges. Through competitive external funding, educational psychology faculty have provided numerous graduate students with research assistantships, offering valuable hands-on experience.

How is the Research Funded?

The LPRC’s research is supported through external grants and contracts. Our findings are regularly published in leading scholarly journals and presented at national conferences.
